Catalysts of change: Exploration, War, and Revolution [videorecording] /produced by Productions Coscient, Inc. in association with Canal Vie, TFO-TV Ontario, Motion International. Princeton, NJ: Films for the Humanities & Sciences [distributor], 2000. 3 videocassettes (53 min. ea.) Performed by: Narrator, George Morris. Abstract Exploration: Spurred on by trade, necessity, and curiosity, all peoples throughout history have engaged in exploration. Yet while some nations, such as China, explored with the goal of forming peaceful trade partnerships, others, including Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Britain, and even the U.S., tended toward conquest and colonization. This program investigates the imperatives that promote exploration, addressing the characteristics that have prompted some countries to coexist peacefully and others to act exploitatively. War: Wherever political, religious, racial, ideological interests collide, diplomacy and tolerance historically yield to the barbarity of war. In this program, political scientist Charles-Philippe David, Jean-Louis Dufour, editor-in-chief of the magazine Difense, and historians Robert O'Connell, Andri Corvisier, and Laurent Henninger trace the history of warfare from its remote origins to the present day and discuss whether it is avoidable or an innate human drive. Will the battles of tomorrow be fought by computer proxies, or will conventional troops always be used to attack and occupy territory? Revolution: By definition, a revolution is an abrupt and usually violent change in the political and social structure of a country, occurring when people are pressed to the very limits of tolerance. Historian Michel Guay and sociologists Alain Touraine and Jack Goldstone discuss the preconditions necessary to ignite a revolution and present possible outcomes, drawing on historic examples such as the American, French, Russian, and Chinese Revolutions. Nonmilitary revolutions are considered as well, including the industrial, feminist, and information revolutions. University Museum Library Desk VHS HM831 .C38 2000

The cult of the beautiful body: observations from the plane of body consciousness [videorecording] / by Gero Gemballa; a Bilder & Worte production for Deutsche Welle TV; executive producer, Jvrg Seibold. English version. Princeton, NJ: Films for the Humanities & Sciences, c1999. 1 videocassette (30 min.)Abstract: "Extreme body consciousness has taken youthful narcissism to new heights, making 'boy meets girl' a ruthless physical selection process. This program examines the cult of the body in Western society and how it has reduced today's courtship ritual to a one-dimensional experience based primarily on physical attraction. Beginning with the pressure that men currently feel to conform to an abstract physical ideal, the role of the media is scrutinized, along with the culture that from Munich to Los Angeles excludes all who do not espouse the ideals of bodily perfection at the expense of all else."
